Every tutor at Learn Locus was chosen by Doug. Different levels, from arithmetic to university calculus — the same idea about what understanding is for.
Doug’s approach hasn’t changed in three decades: understanding first, technique second, and no tricks that fall apart when the question is phrased differently. Students who work with him tend to leave able to explain their own reasoning out loud — which is what the next exam, and the one after it, will ask of them.
He began teaching mathematics at Ransom Everglades in Miami in 1990 and moved to London in 1999 to join the American School in London, where he taught for twenty years. About five years in, students began asking for help outside class; by 2019 that second practice had become the whole of his work. He now tutors from North Carolina — students in high school and at university, on both sides of the Atlantic.
He has taught students in the American, British, and IB systems, and works in whichever one the student is in.

Kathleen has taught mathematics for more than thirty years. She specializes in AP Calculus AB and BC and their university equivalents. Before teaching she worked in finance in New York and Miami, so when she explains what calculus is for, she is speaking from experience.
“Giving a student the confidence to attack a complex question. In some small way, I’ve helped them find a different path.”
Danielle has taught and tutored mathematics for nearly twenty years, and holds a bachelor’s in mathematics and a master’s in education. She works on geometry, algebra, and middle-school mathematics, often with students who have decided in advance that they can’t do it. She is patient about that, and clear.
“Seeing confidence grow — the aha moments, but also the quieter ones, when a student finishes something and says it wasn’t actually so bad.”
Jack tutors algebra, calculus, and physics for high-school and university students, and is himself a physics student at the University of South Florida. Students remember his explanations.

Bradley has taught for more than twenty years in American and IB schools, and holds a master’s in education. He works with elementary and middle-school students on the foundations — arithmetic, word problems, early algebra — closing gaps and settling nerves before tests. His view is that drills alone don’t hold; understanding does, and he teaches for that.
Beyond mathematics and physics, Learn Locus teaches English, the sciences, French, and Spanish. These tutors come from the same circle and are held to the same standard; Doug matches each student with one personally, once he understands what the student needs.
